If you are a Dallas property owner, there’s a good chance you’ve encountered a cockroach or two in your day. After all, they are one of the most common home-invading pests in Dallas. However, just because they're common doesn’t mean that we want them in our houses. Not only are they just plain gross, but they are dangerous, too. As such, it is important for you to know what options you can rely on should your Dallas home be overrun with these filthy pests.
Identifying Cockroaches Common To The Area
While there are over 4,500 species of cockroaches in the world, here in Dallas, you will most likely ever encounter four. These are German cockroaches, American cockroaches, brown-banded cockroaches, and Oriental cockroaches.
American cockroaches are usually reddish-brown in color and feature a pale-yellow figure-eight pattern on the backs of their heads. The largest species of home-invading cockroaches in the United States, American cockroaches can grow to be 2 1/8th inches long. Both males and females can, and will, fly.
Brown-banded cockroaches are brown with distinct light-brown banding across their wings. They grow to be ½ an inch long. The males have long wings and are able to fly, while the females have underdeveloped wings that prevent them from flying.
German cockroaches are light brown or tan in color, and they feature two dark parallel lines just behind their heads. They can grow to be about 5/8th of an inch long. Both males and females have wings and are able to fly, although, they rarely do so. German cockroaches prefer to live in warm, humid places close to food or water sources.
Oriental cockroaches are shiny black in color and can grow to be one inch long. The males have underdeveloped wings while the females don’t have any wings at all. As a result, neither can fly.
The Dangers That Cockroaches Bring Into Homes
Most people know that cockroaches are gross. However, not many people are aware of the fact that cockroaches are dangerous, too. That’s because cockroaches often reside in contaminated areas such as sewer pipes and trash bins where they can pick up all sorts of harmful bacteria and pathogens. They then bring those contaminants into our homes and spread them throughout. Diseases that cockroaches have been known to spread include salmonellosis, dysentery, plague, E. coli, typhoid, and listeriosis. In addition to this, cockroaches can also trigger asthma and allergy attacks in at-risk people.
Why It’s So Hard To Keep Cockroaches Out
Although they do not grow to be any larger than a few inches, cockroaches are formidable pests. That’s because they can adapt to a variety of environments and can survive for long periods of time without food or water. Therefore, even if you remove any food or water sources in your home, cockroaches could persist. Additionally, cockroaches can fit through very small cracks and holes. As such, keeping them out of your home requires the tedious job of filling in every single opening, no matter how small, around your home. To make matters worse, once they get inside, it is hard to contain an infestation. Therefore, you need to know what your best options are to control cockroaches around your home.
